Vernon Hupf

January 7, 1932 — June 17, 2016

Vernon Joseph Hupf enjoyed a lifetime of farming, dancing, praying, gardening, tinkering with farm machinery and loving his family before being called to his eternal home unexpectedly on June 17, 2016, at the age of 84. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 23, 2016 at St. Mathias Catholic Church, 23315 Northfield Blvd., Hampton. A visitation will be held Wednesday, June 22, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the church, as well as one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Born on January 7, 1932, to Mary (Breyer) and Joseph Hupf, Jr., Vernon grew up in Kranzburg, South Dakota, and graduated from Goodwin High School. After graduating, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a Sergeant in Germany during the Korean Conflict and earned two medals of service. Before enlisting, he met the love of his life, Olive Nygaard, while enjoying one of his favorite past times–rollerskating. Vernon and Olive married on June 11, 1955, and moved to their farm in Randolph, Minnesota, in 1960. There, they dairy farmed together, raising six children and countless Holstein cows. Vernon was a 4-H leader and an active member of St. Mathias Catholic Church in Hampton, Minnesota. He loved tending his plentiful garden, restoring his tractors and Studebaker truck, playing cards (especially with his grandkids) and polka dancing. He had an unconditional love for the Minnesota Twins (he rarely missed listening to a game on the radio!) and a smile that wouldn't stop. Vernon is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Olive; children, Jeannette (Robert) Sheehan, Mary Nelson, Kathy Hupf, John Hupf, and Libby (Todd) Montreuil; grandchildren, Kelly (Dan) Kendall, Andrew (Juliana) Sheehan, Krista (Jordan) Kuzma, Erik (Megan) Nelson, Tracy Nelson, Brenda (Alex) Miller, AJ (Cortney Johnson) Neil, Molly (Ryan) Kappers, Dylan and Cooper Tate; great grandchildren, Connor and Alex Kendall, Elena and Hattie Sheehan, Eleanor Kuzma, Charlie, Levi and Nora Nelson, Caleb and Travis Miller, Adalynn Neil, Haiden and Emily Kappers; brother, Elmer (Mary) Hupf; and beloved canine counterpart, Diesel. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Joseph Hupf; son, Steve Hupf; and son-in-law, Duane Nelson. "And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer."
