Alice Unger

December 19, 1922 — May 27, 2012

Alice Lundquist Unger, age 89 of Red Wing and formerly of Detroit, MI, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, May 27, 2012 at Deer Crest Assisted Living in Red Wing. Alice Kathryn Lundquist Unger was born December 19, 1922, in Parnell Township, Traverse County MN, to J Victor and Elli (Stomberg) Lundquist. She was the youngest of eleven children. Although Alice's father died in a tragic threshing accident 3 months before she was born the family pulled together with love, faith and determination. They formed a close bond which remained throughout their lives. Alice was baptized and confirmed in Siloah Lutheran Church in Parnell Township where she attended country school. Alice graduated from Wheaton High School in 1940. She then began a nursing program at Bethesda Lutheran Hospital in St. Paul, MN, from which she graduated in 1942. As a registered nurse, she worked at the Wheaton Hospital before moving to California where she held several nursing positions. Alice especially enjoyed the seven years employed as a private duty nurse in Pennsylvania for Samuel Robinson, the founder of the American Stores Company. On May 23, 1957, she married Andrew Rudolph Unger, a Swedish immigrant born in Torsby, Sweden. They made their home in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan where he worked as a lineman supervisor for Detroit Edison. To this union, two children were born, Andrew Peter (Peter) and Alice Evelyn (Lisa). Alice and Andrew had a very loving relationship, unfortunately Andrew died suddenly of a heart attack in October, 1959. Alice continued to live in Michigan but frequently commuted to the family farm in Parnell Township to care for her mother and other siblings. She was active in both church and community affairs. She was an active long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Detroit, MI and also First English Lutheran in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. She spent the past five years at Deer Crest Assisted living in Red Wing. She became a member of Spring Garden Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. She frequently visited with family and friends who enjoyed listening to stories of her interesting life. She also participated in activities at Deer Crest. Alice is survived by her daughter Lisa (Scott) Emkovik of Cannon Falls, MN; two grandsons, Andy and Alex; one sister, Doris Fletcher of Claremont, CA, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, her son Peter, her parents, nine brothers and sisters, Edith Lundquist, Evelyn Lundgren, Lawrence Lundquist, Amy Krantz, Edna Lundquist, Florence Duin, Wilton Lundquist, Leonard Lundquist and Inez Miller; one nephew, Gordon Duin and two nieces, Elaine Chaput and Jolaine Miller. Funeral services will be held at Spring Garden Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls on Wednesday, June 6th at 2 pm, with Pastors Nick and Cindy Fisher-Broin officiating. There will be visitation at the church from 1-2 pm. Burial will be arranged at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, MI. Memorials in honor of Alice may be given to Spring Garden Lutheran Church or, since honoring and preserving the memory of her ancestors was so important, make a donation to your own family cemetery association in her honor.
