Allyn Mensing

December 29, 1950 — December 3, 2012

ALLYN LEE MENSING The angels are welcoming a kind and gentle man who faced a life of challenges with strength, courage and grace. Allyn Lee Mensing, 61, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 at the Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. Memorial services will be 3 pm Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, 7459 Hwy 19 Blvd in Cannon Falls with visitation for one hour prior. Allyn was born Dec. 29, 1950, the second of five children of Lawrence and Bonita Mensing. He grew up on the family farm southeast of Mapleton, Minn., near Mankato, where he loved the farm fields and worked hard with his dad. He also loved woodworking in the shop, puttering around with tools and followed farm news, weather and sports on the radio. Al graduated from Mapleton High School, where he played the tuba in the band, loved basketball and football and was on the varsity team. Tragedy struck after his junior year, when a car crash left him with a severe head injury requiring months of hospitalization and therapy. But Al overcame that challenge, too. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. for a short time, then went to work for Art Sign Materials in south Minneapolis. After that store closed, he worked in maintenance at a J.C. Penney Store in Roseville before he found a job that lasted 22 years, at Midwest of Cannon Falls. He loved his warehouse co-workers and they loved him. Al was diagnosed with leukemia in 2007, but he battled that, as he had all of his other challenges – with bravery and humor. He fought back from a number of infections and other medical setbacks. Finally, when he lacked the strength to fight on, God brought him peace early on Dec. 3, 2012. Al is survived by his sister and caregiver, Marlys Kaye of Rosemount, sister Phyllis of Bismarck, N.D.; brother Dennis of Mankato as well as his nieces -- Heather (Rod) Erickson and their children, Henry and Chloe of St. Paul; Patti (Mitch) Langner and their children, Maggie and Molly of East Bethel -- and nephew Tom of Rosemount. Other survivors include his uncles and aunts, Bill and Mary Mensing of Mapleton and Burnell and Vivian Schubbe of Florida, and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Bonita, and sister Ardyce. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Al, you left us much too soon, but you left us richer for your life. Your spirit and love will remain with us forever.
