Arvel Mitchener

Arvel Lee Mitchener, age 74 of Red Wing and formerly of Cannon Falls, died at his home in Red Wing on Wednesday, June 27, 2007.



Arvel was born on February 24, 1933 in Harviell, Missouri, the son of Thomas H. and Drew (Kennedy) Mitchener. He attended school in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

He served with the United States Navy during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged on September 16, 1953.



Arvel married Carol J. Banitt on October 24, 1954 in Oklahoma.

Throughout his working career, Arvel was employed as a heavy equipment operator. He worked for Holm Bros. Construction, Holst Construction, and the Bechtel Company on the pipeline. At one time, he had owned and operated a trucking and excavating company. He had also been employed at Meyer Machine as a foreman.

Arvel was a member of the Vasa Lutheran Church, and had also served on the Vasa School Board in the early 1970's. In his later years, he enjoyed woodworking.





He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Carol of Red Wing; sons, Thomas (Rita) of Red Wing, William (Rebecca) of Red Wing, and Timothy of Charles City, IA; daughters, Teresa (Brian) Morrill of Farmington and Penny (Charles) Wichser of Red Wing; 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; one brother, James Mitchener of Irvington, Alabama; three sisters, Mary Daughttee of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Christine Conkright of Alton, Illinois and Imogene Thomas of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.



Arvel was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Jason Rose; two brothers, Robert and Herschel "Dutch" Mitchener; one sister, Susan Howe; and half-brothers and sisters, George, Elmer, Vic, Thelma and Idean, all of St. Louis, MO.



Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 3 at 1:00 pm at the Vasa Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Dobbins and Pastor Lynne Rigg officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5-8 pm, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm, at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Tuesday from 12-1 pm.

Burial of his cremated remains with military honors will be held at a later date at the Vasa Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the Red Wing Area Hospice.

Active pallbearers will be Joe, Bradey and Tyler Thiem, Andy, Chelsey and Emily Mitchener.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lindsey, Nicole, Jamie and Tom Mitchener, Courtney Thiem, Brandon and Cameron Wichser, and Laurie Anderson.
