Benjamin Unger

Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Unger, age 88 of Cannon Falls, died on Friday morning, June 24, 2016 at Mayo Clinic Health System - St. Mary's Campus. Ben was born on July 12, 1927 in Dodge Center, the son of Erhardt H. and Lela "Bertie" (Whetsler) Unger. He attended school in Dodge Center and went to serve with the US Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He started his career with Northern States Power, where he met his future wife. He was a lineman for 38 ½ years, retiring in January, 1987. Ben married Janet Rossi on October 26, 1951 at the Berne Church in Berne, MN. They raised a family of three children while enjoying camping, boating, and traveling together. Jan and Ben enjoyed wintering in Texas and later Arizona. He was an avid sportsman, and loved hunting and fishing. Ben was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls, Kraft-Ostrom American Legion Post #142, Masonic Oriental Lodge #34, a 66-year member of IBEW, and was a Cannon Falls Volunteer Fireman for many years. He is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Janet; children, Lynn (Jim) Gardner of Tucson, AZ and Bruce (Kerry) of Glasgow, MT; grandchildren, Captain Ryan (Mara) Gardner, Michael (Heather) Unger, Steven Unger and Melissa Unger; great-grandchildren, Scarlett Gardner, Ike and Ian Unger; and many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, E.H. and Bertie Unger; son, Dan on November 22, 2008; brother, Eugene; and sister, Vivian Knippel. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls. Interment with military honors will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice. Active urn bearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary urn bearers will be the Brewster's coffee bunch, NSP co-workers, and hunting buddies.
