Donald Thomforde

Donald Arnold Thomforde, age 84 of Goodhue, died on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Gabriela House in Harlingen, Texas. Donald was born on July 22, 1931 in Red Wing, MN the son of Arnold and Myrtle (Lohman) Thomforde. He graduated from Goodhue High School in 1949. He married Shirley Ann Hilan on September 16, 1950 at Minneola Lutheran Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher. He had worked in farming, and later owned Don's Midland Service Station in Goodhue. He also owned and operated Thomforde Enterprise. Donald was active in his church and community. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Goodhue, Goodhue Civic Club, Goodhue Lions, and Goodhue Fire Department. He had formerly served as the mayor of Goodhue for many years. He served on the Midland Coop Board, as well as the Lakewood Village Board in Harlingen. Donald had his pilot license and enjoyed flying small airplanes. He and Shirley spent summers at their cabin in Northern Minnesota and the winters in Harlingen. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley; children, Marie Fjerstad of Mantorville; Val (Dudley) McLinn of Minneapolis, Joyce (Bill) Schulz of Red Wing, Norris (Sue) Thomforde of Goodhue, and Kay (Scott) Evans of Riverview, FL; grandchildren, Kendra Fjerstad, Justin (Callie) Fjerstad, Erin (Matt) Kuhn, Kristin McLinn, Tyler McLinn, Nikki (Wade) Shelstad, Brooke (Tony) Kamps, Brent (Heather) Schulz, Brittney (Rich) Lutjen, Brock (Mindy) Schulz, Jeremy (Melissa) Thomforde, Afton (John) O'Reilly, Brandi (Damien) Turini, Toni Thomforde, Jennifer Howze, and Nathan (Kelly) Hanson; and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Kelly Hanson. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 3 from 4-7 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Goodhue. A memorial service will be on Wednesday, May 4 at 2:00 p.m., with visitation from 1-2 p.m., at the church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Goodhue. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Jeremy Thomforde, Justin Fjerstad, Brent Schulz, Nathan Hanson, Brock Schulz, and Tyler McLinn. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
