Ellwood Benson

June 6, 1919 — October 21, 2007

Ellwood Henry Benson, age 88, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died on Sunday afternoon, October 21, 2007 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, where he has been residing since July.

Ellwood was born on June 6, 1919 in Clark Valley of Cannon Falls Township, the son of Emil Theodore and Anna Elida (Bernanderson) Benson. He attended country school, and farmed in Cannon Falls Township most all of his life.

Ellwood married Marian Eleanor Johnson on November 4, 1942 at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church. A lifelong active member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, he had also served on the church council.

Along with farming, Ellwood had driven school bus, and later worked until retirement at Standard Building Materials in Hastings.

Ellwood enjoyed bowling, golfing and his horses. In his early years, he farmed with the horses. He was a member of the Cannon Falls Saddle Club, and served on the Cannon Valley Fair Board for many years. He also enjoyed traveling (as they would winter in Arizona), driving, and socializing over a cup of coffee. The greatest joy was his family. He loved spending time with his family, especially going to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities.

After nearly 58 years of marriage, Marian died on August 29, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dale "Ted" Benson; and sisters, Hazel Iverson Mai and Juanita Hoverstad.

He is survived by his children, Gary (Margene) Benson of Cannon Falls, Darryl (Becki) Benson of Clarkfield, MN and Kathleen (Jim) McCarthey of Flagstaff, AZ; son-in-law, Richard Budenski of Cannon Falls; nine grandchildren, Craig (Lori) Benson, Danny (Mary) Benson, Sarah (John) Samuelson, Julie (Cory) Knowlton, Brook Benson, Aaron (Erica) Benson, Waylon (Karen) Budenski, Rachel (Adam) Fausch, and Amber (Travis) Huonder; 20 great-grandchildren, Jenifer, Patty, Brandon, Elizabeth, Emily, Michael, Jack, GeorgiaRae, Ben, Samuel, Gabrielle, Deven, Jager, Leighton, Tenely, Keegan, Eleanor, Andrew, Dalton and Christian; sisters-in-law, Arlene Benson of Cannon Falls and Delores Callstrom of Red Wing; brother-in-law, Norval Hoverstad of Dennison; and nieces and nephews.
