Esther Schaetzke

Esther Florence (Westphal) Schaetzke, age 87 of Cannon Falls, died on Sunday morning, October 18, 2015 at The View in Cannon Falls. Esther was born on September 28, 1928 in Waseca, the daughter of Arthur and Florence (Bluhm) Westphal. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waseca. She was married to Melvin R. Schaetzke on June 1, 1952 at the same church. Esther and her late husband were great lovers of the out-of-doors. From the time their children were small, they took family camping and traveling trips through the United States and Canada. They continued to camp until Mel's health prevented it. To hear the wind whistling through the pine trees, to hear the loons sing on the lake, and to just sit and watch the waves roll in on Lake Superior, these were some of her greatest joys. Esther enjoyed counted cross stitch, playing cards, fishing, reading, music, and watching figure skating on TV. Esther is survived by her daughter, Patricia and husband, Kenneth Larson of Sturgeon Lake; her son, Steven Schaetzke and wife, Nancy of Hackensack; and grandson, Andrew Larson and partner Ashley Peterson of Minneapolis. She is also survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of over 42 years, Mel on January 28, 1995; and brother, Norbet Westphal. A visitation will be held on Friday, October 23 from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, 803 Winona St., Northfield. Interment will follow at Woodville Cemetery, Waseca. Memorials are preferred to the Cannon Falls Library and Trinity Lutheran Church. Pallbearers will be Steven Schaetzke, Kenneth and Andrew Larson, Todd and Tom Westphal, and Fred Parduhn. Memorials are preferred to the Cannon Falls Library and Trinity Lutheran Church.
