Frederick Schulz

Frederick "Fred" Rheinhold Schulz, age 77 of Cannon Falls, died on Wednesday morning, January 31, 2007 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.



Fred was born at home on August 13, 1929 in Barnes County, near Valley City, North Dakota, the son of Rheinhold and Lena (Henning) Schulz. He grew up on a farm and did farm work before joining the US Army in 1952. He married Colleen J. Van Guilder on September 16, 1967 at the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer in Cannon Falls.

Following his honorable discharge in 1955, he had been a member of the American Legion in Valley City, ND. Fred had worked for the Wright Tree Service, Des Moines, IA and later National Tree, Owatonna clearing trees from around power lines. He was employed at H & H Silo Company in Cannon Falls, and later by Select Homes in Cannon Falls, where he worked as a trailer home manufacturer. He had worked for the Trading Post in Cannon Falls, moving and setting trailer homes. He had then worked for Greenline Garbage and Tree Com. He worked as a mechanic with Cenex in Inver Grove Heights, and then worked as a mechanic until retirement with Apple Valley Ready Mix.

He had been active in the Moose Lodge in South St. Paul for many years. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, where he had served on the vestry. He enjoyed his church family and the many potluck dinners together! Following his retirement, Fred loved getting together for coffee with the guys, riding his bike, sharing time with and transporting his grandchildren, and watching television.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Colleen; two daughters, Becky Braun of Cannon Falls and Renee of Kansas; a son, Rusty (Teresa) Schulz of Cannon Falls; nine grandchildren, Kathryn, Nicole, Rusty Jr., Marcus, Elizabeth, Susan, Sharon, Melissa and Jessica; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Wells of Portland, OR; two brothers-in-law, Charles Swisher of Dufer, OR and Arlie Van Guilder of Cannon Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Verna Schulz, Ardella Bausch, Dorothy Ackley and Pearl Swisher.





A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, corner of 3rd and Mill Streets, Cannon Falls, with Rev. Roger Claxton officiating.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the Episcopal Guild Hall. There will also be visitation at the church on Saturday from 1-2 p.m.

Memorials are preferred to the family in Fred's name.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ernie Baum, Larry Grimm, Don Sheets, Steve and Lucas Taube, Marvin Lau, Russell Qualle and David Jenson.

Interment will take place at a later date at the Cherry Valley Cemetery.
