James R. Weinel

James Richard Weinel was born on December 8th, 1933 to the son of a lifelong railroad man Daniel, who was from the hills of Kentucky. His mother Gladys, met Daniel in southeastern Minnesota and along with Jim had another son John, and sister Helen.

Jim was born in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, went to school in Randolph, and followed with University of Minnesota, graduating with a civil engineering degree. It was there he met the love of his life, Sharon, while attending classes. They would remain married for 65 years until her death in 2022.

After completing his degree Jim served in the army at the Presidio in San Francisco. Following his stint there, he began working for Sheldahl Corporation in Northfield, Minnesota where he worked on Mylar films for the navy for high altitude balloons and nuclear submarines. Several of his co-workers who became life-long friends left Sheldahl the same time to start their own companies. Jim did this with 3 small children in his house to start Gemini--a plastic fabrication company that he bought for $150 and assumption of significant debt.

The company grew substantially under his leadership. As Jim's successes grew, he never forgot to give back to people in the communities where he was from and to the people who helped him build his life. A particular interest was providing engineering students scholarships to become leaders and entrepreneurs like himself.

Perhaps Jim's favorite thing to do was to meet new people and hear their stories. In his travels, he would often spend hours talking to people he just met, and hearing their perspectives on life. This was true with the people he worked with as well.

Jim and Sharon raised three children, John (Annie), Kris (Christopher) and Siri (Fred) --and were survived by them as well as 11 grandchildren and many friends and relatives.
