John Magnuson

June 30, 1911 — May 24, 2007

John "Wilbur" Magnuson, age 95, a lifelong resident of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday evening, May 24, 2007 at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.



Wilbur was born at home on June 30, 1911 in Leon Township, the son of Carl "Victor" and Euphrosyne "Effie" (Edstrom) Magnuson.

He attended school at Wastedo, and went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in St. Paul in 1932. As a young man, he was active in 4H leadership.

He married Harriet H. Klingberg on August 17, 1935 at her uncle's home (Frank Benson) in Cannon Falls Township. They farmed at the Klingberg farm in Leon Township for six years until buying their farm in Warsaw Township. They farmed until retiring in 1978. They continued to live on the farm, until moving in to Cannon Falls in 1989.

Farming was his life, and he and his wife were dedicated to their farm and raising their three children. He was an active member of the Randolph Baptist Church.

Wilbur enjoyed traveling and visiting with friends. He had also volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program.

He will be fondly remembered for his welcoming smile and his dedication to his family.

His wife of 63 years, Harriet died on November 3, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Michael Larson; three brothers, Carl, Ralph and Alva Magnuson; and sister, Myrtle Trelstad and infant twin sisters.

He is survived by his daughters, Marie (Bob) Peterson of Columbia Heights, Phyllis (Bob) Benz of Cannon Falls, and Marjorie (Lowell) Larson of Owatonna; nine grandchildren, Tom Peterson, Wendy Peterson, David (Susan) Peterson, Carrie (Bill) Gellert, Kevin (Yenela) Benz, Lori (Todd) Lundell, Steven (Yasmine) Benz, Jana (Aaron) Hart and Christopher (Paula) Larson; twenty-one great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ruby Magnuson of Cannon Falls; many nieces and nephews; and very special friend, Eleanor Hultman of Cannon Falls.



Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 30 at 2 pm at the Randolph Baptist Church, with Pastor Curt Batschelet officiating.

Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5-8 pm at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Wednesday from 1-2 pm.



Active pallbearers will be Tom and David Peterson, Todd Lundell, Kevin and Steven Benz, and Christopher Larson.
