Louis Novotny

Louis Jerome "Louie" Novotny, age 88 of Cannon Falls, peacefully passed away in the comfort of his loving family on Tuesday afternoon, October 30, 2012 at Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Louie was born on January 13, 1924 in Conway, ND, the son of Louis Sr. and Sophie (Luzum) Novotny. He married Verneal K. Roden on July 20, 1944 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Osseo, MN. Louie worked as a truck driver for most of his life, retiring in 1986 from K. W. McKee transporting Ford Motor Co. vehicles. He also worked for Wylie Trucking and Chatfield Trucking and as a boiler operator for New Brighton Pole Yards. Throughout his many years of driving, he earned 24 consecutive years of Accident Free Driving Merit Awards, and was a Teamster Union member. Louie and his family farmed 240 acres in Cannon Falls Township (off Clark Valley Road) from 1960-1978. He was a longtime member of St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls and St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Anoka. At both parishes he was active as an usher and in the Knights of Columbus. He loved polka dancing, and he and his wife were members of Polka Lovers Klub of America. He and Verneal wintered in Mesa, AZ and were active members of Venture Out Retirement Community in Mesa. He is survived by his children, Richard (Cheryl) Novotny of Evansville, MN, Raymond Novotny of St. Anthony, Donald "Greg" (Sarah) Novotny of Cannon Falls, Kathleen (Harry) Thompson of Maple Grove, Mary Jo (Clyde) Meadows of Thornton, CO, Patricia (Dave) Thurmes of Hastings, Lawrence "Bobby" (Traci Sandstrom) Novotny of Hampton, Gerald "Jerry" Novotny of Cannon Falls, Daniel (Michelle) Novotny of Cannon Falls and Carol "Susie" (John) Yoakum of San Antonio, TX; 32 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Pederson of Grand Forks, ND; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Sr. and Sophie, his wife of nearly 67 years, Verneal, on June 6, 2011; sons, Michael and Jerome "Joe"; two infant daughters; and siblings, Amelia Bushaw, Adolph, Lester and Harold Novotny. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Nov 3 at 11 a.m. at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls, with Father Leonard Siebenaler officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-7:30 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls, and one hour prior to mass at church. Active pallbearers will be grandsons Cary Novotny, Gabriel Novotny, Ben Zimmerman, Jacob Meadows, Derek Thurmes, Nick Novotny, Brett Novotny and Brian Novotny.
