Marilyn Volkert

April 27, 1926 — September 9, 2007

Marilyn Adele Volkert, age 81, a lifelong resident of Randolph, died on Sunday afternoon, September 9, 2007 at Three Links Care Center in Northfield.

Marilyn was born a twin on April 27, 1926 at home in Castle Rock Township, the daughter of Benjamin and Anna (Becker) Engler. She graduated from Randolph High School, and went on to attend Mankato State University for two years, where she graduated with her teaching certificate. Marilyn, along with her twin sister, Marge and her future sister-in-law, Ruth (Wilder) Engler, taught school together in Winthrop, MN.

Marilyn married Willmer T. Volkert on October 26, 1949 at the Randolph Baptist Church. They started their married life in farming, and together raised their three boys.

Her true joy was in her flower and vegetable gardening! Not only did she provide for her family with all of the fresh and canned goods, but she also used her artistic talents to create art! She was best known for her MN crop art, which were pictures made from seeds. She had received numerous awards over the many years of exhibiting (including Best of Show from the MN State Fair). She brought her vegetables, flowers and artwork to the Cannon Valley Fair, Dakota County Fair, and the Minnesota State Fair for many years. She also did china painting, oil paintings, and made floral centerpieces. She also brought her crafts to the "Marian and Friends" craft show in Randolph for many years.

She has been an active member of the Randolph Baptist Church, where she was very involved with the ladies aid, and served as chairperson for the White Cross Mission Organization.

Marilyn will be remembered most for her love of cats, her gentle smile, her love to shop, and her candy-giving to her grandchildren!

She is survived by her husband of nearly 58 years, Willmer; three sons, Randy (Jane) and Ken (Karen), all of Randolph, and Dean (Sue) of Arden Hills; eight grandchildren, Weston, Jordan, Sheldon, Kayla, Kyle, Sam, Jacky and Becky Volkert; her twin sister, Marge (Melvin) Volkert of New Richmond, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Leonard Engler on March 19, 2006.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Randolph Baptist Church, with Pastor Curt Batschelet officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Hampton Township. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. Visitation will also be held at the church on Thursday from 10-11 a.m.

Active pallbearers will be her nephews, Steve, Herb and John Engler, Lowell and Gene Volkert, and Steve Moore.
