Mary Mills

August 18, 1926 — October 29, 2007

Mary Louise Mills, age 81 of Cannon Falls, died on Monday afternoon, October 29, 2007 at United Hospital in St. Paul.

Mary was born at home in Cannon Falls Township on August 18, 1926, the daughter of John and Violet Wahlstrom. She attended country school until she was 15 years old, and upon the death of her mother at that time, she stayed home to help raise her two younger sisters and tend the farm.

She married Vance L. Mills on December 10, 1960 at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. They lived in Kenyon, and later moved to Northfield in 1967. They were foster parents for over 25 children for many years while living in Kenyon and Northfield. They moved back to Cannon Falls in 1981.

Before marrying, Mary worked at the Bus Depot Caf??. She was later employed at Kid Dud's, the Cannon Falls Community Hospital in dietary for many years, and was a bartender at the Legion and the VFW.

Mary was a longtime active member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, where she was on the altar committee for many years. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and embroidered bibs for new babies at the hospital.

Mary loved to bake and attend church! She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, cross stitching, and working on crossword puzzles. Her kind manner and welcoming smile will be missed by all!

She is survived by her four children, Mike (Marge) of Lakeville, Vicki Lee (John) Geisler of Lake City, Becky (Tim) Sletten of Red Wing and Brenda (Wayne) Tonn of Cannon Falls; 11 grandchildren, Christopher (Marisa) Geisler, J. Griffin (Christina McAndrews) Geisler, Jessica (Brad) Mollen, Terry Gilomen, Laurie (Todd) Hengel, Sean and Kelsey Sletten, Jennifer, Beth, Katie and Matthew Mills; three great-grandchildren, Kylie and Paige Mollen, and Patrick McAndrews Geisler; two sisters, Joan (Hamilane) Johnson of Bloomington and Marilyn (Dale) Grote of RioVerde, AZ; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vance on February 15, 2005; and sister, Janice Karnick.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Gary Schulz officiating. Interment with VFW Auxiliary honors will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls.
