Mildred Peterson

Mildred Eleanor Peterson, age 93, formerly of Cannon Falls, died on Thursday afternoon, September 14, 2006 at Regions Hospital in Saint Paul. Mildred was born the second of five children on March 18, 1913 in Forest City, Iowa, the daughter of Albert F. and Hilma E. (Johnson) Segerstrom. She completed high school in Forest City, graduating in 1930. During high school she completed special courses called "normal training", so that she could teach after graduation. She taught in two Mount Valley Township, IA schools. Later she attended Cedar Falls Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA and was a member of Phi-Beta Kappa. Her first public school position was in Hanlontown, IA, where she taught 3rd and 4th grades for several years. When she accepted a teaching position in Clear Lake, IA, she taught 5th grade. Mildred married Roland H. Peterson on August 18, 1951 in Forest City, IA, and they made their home in Cannon Falls. She enjoyed being a homemaker, and they were blessed with the birth of their son, Keith in 1952. After Keith started school, Mildred returned to teaching. She taught at the Cannon Falls Elementary School, and from 1961-76, she taught at Wastedo. During the late 60's and early 70's, she attended summer school at Winona State Teachers College. In 1971, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Mildred finished her teaching career in 1977, when she taught a 6th grade class in Cannon Falls. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, crafts, quilting, baking and gardening. She was a member of the Cornerstone Community Church in Northfield. She had served on the Cannon Falls Library Board and the Community Hospital Auxiliary. Mildred also volunteered as a reader at the nursing home. On December 9, 2000, Roland passed away. They had spent almost 50 years together. She had been living at the Northfield Retirement Center since July, 2003, and was currently residing at Alterra Clare Bridge in Eagan.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Belinda Peterson of Dennison; her grandchildren, Nathan and Jennifer Peterson; great-granddaughter, Ophelia; her brother and his wife, Benjamin and Muriel Segerstrom of Owatonna; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Segerstrom of Chisholm, Betty Segerstrom of Waterloo, IA and Muriel Segerstrom of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roland; brothers, Milton, Charles and Robert Segerstrom; and nieces, Martha Gremillion and Bev Ruble. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cornerstone Community Church, 1313 So. Division St. in Northfield, with Pastor Tom Franklin officiating.

Following a luncheon, interment will take place at the Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home, 5839 Hwy 19 Blvd in Cannon Falls. Visitation will also be held at church on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. Active pallbearers will be Lowell, Bryan, Derek and Austin Segerstrom, Thomas Ruble and Daniel Gremillion.
