Steve Bishop died unexpectedly at home on Monday December 29, 2025. He was born September 14, 1958, in Zumbrota, MN to Ardith Faye and Wilbur George Bishop. He grew up in Old Concord and graduated from West Concord High School in 1977. He had several occupations throughout his life, including OTR and local truck driving, yard attendant and park maintenance but most of his working years were as a production operator for Sheldahl for over 25 years. It was the Sheldahl blue floor that he met his wife, Dawn Lanning, when she asked to work on his crossword puzzle in the daily paper at his station. Their first date was February 14th 1995 and were wed on their farm on horseback on August 27, 2011. Their life together led to Steve’s true calling as chief ranch hand, master tinkerer and project handy man.
While Steve was not a fan of riding or dogsledding, he always supported his wife’s passion for both and was a real animal lover at heart. His first horse, King, was with us for 28 years and Steve rode King in their wedding. His next horse was his Gypsy Girl, a sassy little mare with a wild mane that he fell in love with when he first saw her. Banjo was Steve’s heart dog and Steve was the one that bought his wife a puppy for the house – first Toby, an Australian Shephard and now Buddy, a Great Pyrenees. His cat, Patches, wasn’t any bigger than the palm of his hand when he brought her in and said what should we do with this little thing, well we kept her for 24 years.
Steve very much enjoyed camping, especially sitting around the fire, pontooning and fishing with his family, thrifting and always looking for used treasures. He dealt with foot, knee and hip issues for all of his life among other health issues later in life but still managed chores and may not have participated in activities as much as he would have liked to but was often a quiet observer with a soft smile while watching the grandkids play. He was always the charmer, proud of the American flag, his favorite celebrity was Shania Twain and the vehicle that he was most proud of was his ’94 Ford Probe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ardith Bishop (DeLong) and Wilbur Bishop. He will be missed by his wife Dawn Lanning, his son Shawn Lanning (Michelle), stepchildren Shane Lanning (Crystal) and Shannon Lanning. His sisters Nancy Finnesgard (Brian), Connie Turner (Alan) and Brenda Grainger. Grandchildren Cameron, Addison, Marshall, Billie and Tatum. Special family friend, Laura Smith, nieces and nephews among many other family members, friends and co-workers.
